2008 "Basil Case Memorial"
Alabama Open
Grandmaster Basil G. Case grew up as a youth in Chicago, Illinois selling newspapers and playing checkers with some of the best players there, and move to Russellville, Alabama around 1950's. He later moved to Haleyville and bought a home in the mid 1950's from his tournament cash prize winnings. Basil was selected for this year's tournament memorial honoree, a fitting tribute to Mr. Case. We honor and remember him as a National Champion who won the 1952 US National 3-move in Ocean City, MD. He also Co-Championed with Edwin Hunt in the 1962 US 3-Move National in Peoria, IL. Basil gave us hundreds of championship match games from his play against Walter Hellman from their two World Title 3-Move Championship Matches in '53 and '63, in addition to his many other master tournaments and match games. Basil died 1/1/1987 at age 77. He authored checker books, manuscripts, and annotated hundreds of championship checker games. We have his Robin-Case, Banks-Case, & Case-Grover Match games, his "My Best 3-Move Checkers" and also his improving Hall's 3 Move Manuscript - containing 50 "Cooks" & Corrections by Basil Case. He printed his ideas, checker analysis, and games in several other checker pamphlets and booklets. We recognize and salute Mr. Case... as a gentleman and a great Grandmaster Checker Player!
The Basil Case 2008 Alabama Open & District V 3-Move Tournament

Tournaments Notes
Congratulations to Larry Pollard who is the 2008 Alabama State Champion for the 10th time and this is his 8th in a row!
Congratulations to Michael Holmes of KY who is the 2008 District 5 Champion!
This was Royce Frederick's first ever ACF sanctioned checker tournament... I think he's hooked!
A special thank you to Larry Pollard and Dallas Ramsey for sponsoring this wonderful tournament, an annual event you definitely want to play. Alabama/D5 gets larger and better by the year.
A big thank you to Frank Davis - Tournament Director & Referee and Mary - Scorekeeper who did a great job running this well organized tournament with a smooth professional directorship, as usual.
The players at the tournament opening ceremony received a warm welcome to Haleyville by Mayor Pro-tem, "Bicycle" Richard Bittinger. Mayor Ken Suneri couldn't make it but would drop by later. We also appreciated the presence of Mr. Ronald and Mrs. Emma Raburn at the tournament who is the daughter of Basil G. Case which we dedicated this 2008 Alabama/D5 tournament to his memory.
A local gentleman, Dwight Creel knowing about The Basil Case Memorial Checker Tournament at the Galley restaurant when out and bought up a stack of newspapers so we players would be sure to have a copy. This is an example of the Haleyville's hospitality and thoughtfulness shared by it's citizens.
We appreciate Kelly Cummings, Larry Pollard's daughter for helping with door prizes, welcome bags, refreshments/drinks/fruit, large cooler of drinks and bottle water, candies, cookies, etc, and a big vegetable & dip platter available through out tournament.
12 States, 9 State Champions, 3 National Champions, and the
ACF World Champion were here representing checker at this tournament of 30
entrants. A
delightful, fun tournament with plenty of competition and fellowship.
A number of local merchants donated money, food, and prizes. newspaper article.
We voted on playing 7 rounds of Swiss play with only re-pairing
on the last round in the Masters and Majors. Minors played a double round robin
with last round of Swiss.

All three divisions received trophies for the top finishers and a Total Cash Prize Fund of $1,817.00 was paid through all division entries.
Cash prize winnings are split between tied players on game points, while finish position is determined on honor points where a tie can be separated.
Wilma Wolverton had planned to attend and ride in with Gayle and Maxine Helterbrand as usual, but greater circumstances kept her close by her brother James Newberry who is critically ill and not expected to live. James Floyd Newberry Funeral Program
A copy of Mr. Richard Fortman's obituary was available.
There were a number of wives present and they seem to enjoy themselves.
Adam Hicks was there representing HBTV 5 & HBTV.us - News & Information, taking photos and interviewing players. Here is their Saturday news article.
We discussed the 2009 GAYP National which was suggested to be held the first week of August. Hopefully we can submit a bid to have it in Lebanon, TN under the Director/Sponsorship of Frank & Mary Davis. A number of players made donations and pledges, so I will continue to call upon you to make this a reality.
